Our History

Whitby Seafoods Ltd was founded in 1985 by Graham Whittle, from the assets of Whitby Shellfish Company based in Larpool Lane in Whitby. Whitby Seafoods pioneered wholetail scampi with the breakthrough market leading product Whitby Scampi. This was one of the very first whole tail scampi products ever launched and changed the quality expectations of the pubs and their customers.

Whitby Scampi was soon joined by other catering products and the company enjoyed local and then national success, steadily increasing the distribution beyond Yorkshire across the UK and Ireland.

In 1996 Graham relocated the business from the centre of town to a six-acre site on the outskirts of Whitby where there was sufficient space to expand the business and create a more efficient and successful Scampi breading and battering line.

2006 saw the production capacity expand again with a £3million investment increasing production to 3000 tonnes per annum. Not satisfied with this Whitby Seafoods acquired W. Middleton and Son in Kilkeel, Northern Ireland from Jim Middleton and Jack Cowden the year after. Jack Cowden continues to run the Northern Ireland operation and is a director of the company.

2007 marked the first committed entry into retail with a range of frozen products including Scampi, fishcakes, and goujons.

Today, as the retail and catering business expands so does the investment and later this year further production capacity will be coming on stream doubling capacity to 7000 tonnes per annum.
